About Parliament Square
Constructed in 1868 on the site of what was once a churchyard, Parliament Square was built to open up the area around the Houses of Parliament (or Westminster Palace, as it is also known) and aid traffic in the area. The square is situated in the Westminster district of London, and the east side of the square is just opposite one of the main entrances to the Houses of Parliament, making it an ideal place for ceremonies, protests and media interviews with members of Parliament. During World War II, the Westminster area suffered bomb damage, and the square was redesigned to encompass the square lawn, paved walkways, and benches. In 1996, the square was listed as an English Heritage Grade II Registered Garden of Special Historic Interest.
Apart from the Houses of Parliament, other places of interest surrounding the square include the Clock Tower (home to the famous Big Ben), Westminster Abbey, Westminster Bridge, the Jewel Tower, Middlesex Guildhall, and the church of St. Margaret’s Westminster. There are a number of statues of famous statesmen scattered throughout the square, including those of Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, and Nelson Mandela, which was erected in 2007. Parliament Square is located just a short walk from St. James’s Park, St. James’s Palace (built by Henry VIII), Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Cathedral, the National Gallery and other London attractions.
